FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Publication of "The Forgotten Crown: Louis XVI in the History of France and Navarre", a Historical Vindication Written by His Dynastic Descendant
Two hundred and thirty years after the political convulsions that reshaped Europe, the historical work “The Forgotten Crown: Louis XVI in the History of France and Navarre”, carrying the subtitle “A Documentary Portrait of a King Before the Abyss of His Time”, has officially been published. Structured around one hundred detailed documentary and biographical vignettes, this volume has been authored and presented by his legitimate dynastic descendant, H.R.H. Luis José Manuel
de Borbón, Prince of Bourbon-Conti and Bourbon de la Marche.
Challenging the reductive narrative that has spent over two centuries dismissing Louis XVI as an indolent, passive, or disconnected ruler, this research restores the genuine stature of an enlightened, scientifically minded, and constitutional sovereign. Drawing upon rigorous primary sources, the author brings forward the prolific achievements of a monarch dedicated to naval modernization, major maritime explorations—such as the Lapérouse global expedition—, early industrial steam adoption, applied botany, and foundational judicial and hospital reforms, chief among them the formal abolition of judicial torture years before the revolutionary upheaval.
The volume devotes fundamental analysis to the constitutional and institutional status of the Kingdom of Navarre (Basse-Navarre), a sovereign domain linked to France solely through a bilateral dynastic pact that Versailles pledged to uphold. “The Forgotten Crown” reconstructs how the Navarrese Estates asserted their historical autonomy and charters (fueros) until their unilateral dissolution in 1789, when the Crown was compelled by revolutionary decree to abandon the title of "King of France and of Navarre" in favor of "King of the French."
In the words of the author and descendant, the Prince of Bourbon-Conti and Bourbon de la Marche:
“This volume does not represent a simple exercise in ancestral memory, but an act of rigorous historiographical justice and moral restitution. Mainstream historiography long favored the convenient caricature of the scaffold over the uncomfortable reality of a lucid, humanist monarch whose ultimate political tragedy arose not from cowardice, but from an unbending moral refusal to order a massacre of his own people on the steps of his palace. Rescuing his legacy from revolutionary polemics returns dignity to a ruler guided by science, law, and conscience.”
The book also delves into the critical hours of his final years: the constitutional resistance, the physical sieges of the Tuileries Palace, the solitary intellectual routine within the Temple Tower, and his serene composure on the scaffold on January 21, 1793. Written with analytical precision and supported by royal edicts, diplomatic dispatches, and eyewitness accounts, “The Forgotten Crown” establishes itself as an essential contribution for academic historians, constitutional jurists, and researchers of the Enlightenment and the Ancien Régime.
